If you’ve read my previous Facebook Live articles, then you would know I’ve gone on Facebook Live over 125 times.
I wish I could say all 125 broadcasts were kick-ass, but not all of them were.
Here are some of the “uh-oh” moments I’ve had on Facebook Live that left the perfectionist in me wincing.
- On several occasions, my wifi connection was bad and I had interruptions in my broadcast.
- My mom tried calling me when I was broadcasting from my phone. The result? Interrupted broadcast. Hi, mom!
- I went live without outlining my topic and when the camera turned on my mind went blank.
- Oh… and one time I tried playing Spice Girls music in the background and my video was flagged and removed from Facebook. Whoops.
The perfectionist in me quickly learned that not every Facebook Live was going to go swimmingly, but if I continued to show up and practice then it would get easier… and my livestream videos would get better.
One thing I did to improve the quality of my broadcasts was put a system in place before I went Live.
Let me walk you through it.
#1: DETERMINE YOUR SCHEDULE
Think of your Facebook Live like it’s a TV show. Set a date and time you are always going to show up. This will help you stay consistent, and let your audience know when to expect you.
Once your followers get used to seeing you on Facebook Live at a set time and date, then will show up to meet you. Yay!
To make life easier for you, block off your Facebook Live time on your calendar. I did this for my own Facebook Live show and it has helped me commit to going live weekly.
Whatever you do, be consistent!
It’s about showing up.
Then showing up some more.
And showing up even more.
#2: BRAINSTORM TOPIC IDEAS
When you create content, remember it’s about being authentic, providing value, and building relationships.
Compile a list of Facebook Live topics that would resonate with your customers. Topics that will excite them before you have solved an issue they kept them up at night. Create incredible value where they just can’t say no.
If you are struggling with ideas, try using BuzzSumo to research topics. Their website allows you to see what topics are getting shared the most. Plus, you can see your competitors most shared and backlinked content.
For instance, if I want to see Neil Patel’s most shared content this past year, I could go to BuzzSumo’s website and search neilpatel.com. And I’d get the following results:
Another tool you can use to generate topic ideas is Quora.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with Quora, let me give you a little background. Quora is a site where people can post questions on any topic. Then, most awesome people across the planet will hop on the forums and answer the questions.
Quora is a fantastic research tool because you can see what types of questions people are asking in regards to your product or industry. Take note of these questions and use them as inspiration for content.
You can also use Amazon, Pinterest, Google to help you find topic ideas. Or, survey your customers and ask them what they would like to know or learn about.
As you can see, there are TONS of places to get incredible topic ideas!
#3: OUTLINE YOUR FACEBOOK LIVE
Have you ever been in a conversation with friend and forgot what you were going to say next? Talk about frustrating!
Now, imagine doing that on a Livestream broadcast.
If this happens to you, it could make you feel flustered.
I know that’s how I felt when it happened to me.
I’m not saying this to make you feel scared by Facebook Live. Instead, I say this because there is a way to improve your odds of having a “blank moment” on your broadcast.
Outline your Facebook Live. Simple, right?
Creating an outline will save you just in case you go completely blank and forget what you were talking about.
Note: I typed out my entire Facebook Live a couple of times and that was a bad idea too. That’s because I was trying to remember my lines. I would go blank if I couldn’t remember a line and the broadcast felt less authentic. Outlining is the way to go.
#4: CREATE AN AWESOME HEADLINE AND DESCRIPTION
It’s time to use your imagination! You need a KILLER title and description for your Facebook Live.
Here are several ways you can test out headlines.
- Ask your followers and friends on social media to choose between a couple of headlines (works great if you set it up as a poll on Facebook).
- Use CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer tool. This is one of my favorite tools for writing video and blog post titles. It will give your headline a grade and tell you ways you can improve it.
- Pay attention to the headlines that catch your attention. Are there certain words or phrases they’re using? Try using them!
After you’ve decided on a headline, it’s time to write your description. Write creative copy in a conversational tone, and fill it with keywords. Here’s an example of one of mine:
Remember, first impressions are powerful. You have to grab your audience’s attention even before they hit ‘play’.
#5: CREATE VISUALS (if needed)
Do you need visuals to help people understand your content? Or, do you just want to take your presentation to the next level?
Here are some ways you can incorporate visuals into your presentation to take it up a notch.
#1: Brand it- Include your logo or website information in the footer of your video.
#2: Highlight a correlating opt-in incentive- Another great thing to add to your video is a slide that highlights an opt-in incentive. I’ve also seen people feature their opt-in incentive in the footer section of the video. Bonus: This will help you grow your email list!
#3: Create Slides- Do you want to share a presentation with your audience to help get your information across and provide added value? You can create a presentation in PowerPoint, or turn your images into slides for visuals.
#4: Use a Whiteboard- And then there’s the old school whiteboard that requires no technology whatsoever (outside of Facebook Live, of course). This option is great if you’re going Live from a mobile device or if you like to draw visuals to reinforce learning.
Whiteboard people are the ultimate in talent and coordination. These people can probably chew gum and walk a straight line at the same time as well.
#6: PROMOTE. PROMOTE. PROMOTE.
Tell your friends and family. Share it with your email list, on your Facebook Page, in your Facebook Group, on Twitter, Instagram… and wherever else your audiences is gathering.
Shout if from the rooftops and the top of the hill. Spray paint it on walls….(Oops…forget about that last one, it may be illegal. Ha!).
You get my point – promote your Facebook Live everywhere. People won’t know unless they are told. And people need to be told more than once.
I’ve incorporated this into my weekly social media publishing schedule. The day prior to going Live, I put an image up on Facebook with the topic, time, and a description about the broadcast.
#7: CHOOSE YOUR TECHNOLOGY
You mean there are choices? Yes, there are, as a matter of fact!
Here are the different technology set-ups you can choose from. Choose the one that works best for you and what you want to accomplish.
- Smarthphone with tripod, mic and addons
- Desktop using a webcam and a program like eCamm Live.
- Professional set-up (e.g. professional camera, studio, lights, microphones, make-up artists, etc.)
If you are just getting started with Facebook Live, then I encourage you to go Live from a mobile device. This is a great way to get you comfortable on camera and familiarize yourself with how Facebook Live operates on the back end.
#8: CHECK YOUR WIFI CONNECTION
No matter where you go Live, make sure you have a strong connection.
There is nothing more frustrating than being Live and losing your connection.
If this happens, you may have people hop off the video. Us humans, we have attention spans worse than goldfish.
If you are going to go Live somewhere new, do a few test runs and make sure all goes smooth. This will save you TONS of unnecessary annoyance and frustration.
#9: SHAKE YOUR JITTERS
Let’s face it. Going Live for the first time can be stressful and give you the jitters. I’ve been there.
There are a few things you can do to push past this emotion and get comfortable before your broadcast.
- Go Live on private mode to practice. Did you know you can actually set a Facebook Live to private mode so it doesn’t go out to all of your followers? Yep, I do not lie. Go out there and practice your little heart out.
- Do a power pose. Have you heard of the Wonder Woman pose? Look at her image. A lot of times you will find her feet shoulder width apart, hands on hips, shoulders back, head high. You can tell she is confident when in this pose. Some say that if you hold this pose for just 2 minutes, it will boost your confidence. Go ahead, try it!
- Meditation is a fantastic way to calm nerves and jitters. There are so many meditation methods out there. You can search for one on Youtube or find an app in the apps store.
- Visualize your Facebook Live. It also helps to sit with your eyes close and imagine being on Facebook Live. See yourself going through your presentation call, confident and owning it.
- Breathe, breathe, breathe.
As you consistently show up each week, you will begin to notice that it gets easier. More people will begin showing up. They will see your confidence, hear your authority and come to anticipate your broadcast each week.
Now, what is there left to do?
- Determine your schedule – same day and time each week.
- Brainstorm different topics and create an editorial calendar.
- Outline your topic.
- Create an awesome headline and description.
- Create any visuals you may need.
- Promote. Promote. Promote.
- Choose your technology.
- Make sure you have a strong wifi-connection.
- Shake your jitters.
